
Bounce Flash Is Great Until the Ceiling Is Black

Bounce flash is one of those things that feels almost too easy when the room cooperates.
Point the flash up.
Maybe turn it slightly behind you.
Let the ceiling become a giant light source.
Suddenly the light gets softer, faces look better, and everything feels more natural.
Perfect.
Then you walk into a ballroom with a black ceiling thirty feet above your head.
Now what?
This is where bounce flash stops being a technique and starts becoming a conversation with the room.
Sometimes the room says yes.
Sometimes the room says absolutely not.
Bounce flash works because the room becomes your modifier
That is really all it is.
Instead of firing a tiny hard light directly at somebody, you fire that light at a bigger surface.
The surface reflects it back.
The bigger that effective light source becomes, the softer the light can look.
White ceiling above you?
Great.
Large neutral wall behind you?
Also great.
Bright corner where the ceiling and wall meet?
Even better sometimes.
You are basically borrowing the building.
That is one of the reasons I like bounce flash so much for events.
I do not need to carry a softbox through a crowded reception.
The room already has one.
If the room is willing to cooperate.
Ceiling height matters more than people think
A low white ceiling is easy.
A twelve foot ceiling is usually manageable.
A twenty five foot ceiling?
Now we are getting into nonsense.
The farther the light has to travel, the more power you need.
The flash goes up.
The light hits the ceiling.
Then it has to come all the way back down to the subject.
That is a lot of distance.
This is where people start firing the flash at full power every few seconds and wondering why recycle times are terrible and the batteries are dying.
At some point, bouncing off the ceiling stops being efficient.
You can still technically do it.
That does not mean you should.
Black ceilings are not your friend
Black ceilings do exactly what they are supposed to do.
They absorb light.
That is great for theaters, clubs and venues trying to control reflections.
It is less great when you are trying to bounce a flash.
You can point the flash straight up and convince yourself something is happening.
Sometimes a tiny amount is.
Usually not enough.
And even if you get something back, you may be wasting a ridiculous amount of flash power to get it.
This is where I stop trying to win an argument with the architecture.
If the ceiling is black, I look somewhere else.
Walls are often better than ceilings anyway
A wall can give you much nicer direction.
If I bounce off a ceiling, the light tends to come from above.
That is fine.
If I bounce off a wall to my left, now the light can come from the side.
That starts looking much more like actual directional light.
More shape.
More depth.
Less flatness.
If the wall is large, white and close enough, it can be fantastic.
I especially like bouncing slightly behind me and to one side.
The light comes back toward the subject at an angle instead of just dropping straight down.
It feels more natural.
The color of the wall matters
This is one of the easiest ways to accidentally ruin bounce flash.
White wall?
Perfect.
Cream wall?
Usually fine.
Dark red wall?
Now everybody is red.
Green wall?
Congratulations, your skin tones are now radioactive.
When you bounce flash, the surface becomes part of the light.
That includes the color.
Sometimes white balance can help.
Sometimes it cannot.
If the wall is strongly colored, I usually stop treating it like a neutral reflector.
Because it is not.
Do not just point the flash straight up every time
This is one of those habits that gets taught because it works often enough.
Flash straight up.
Done.
But straight up is not always the best direction.
Think about where you want the light to come from.
If I want the face lit from camera left, I need to bounce the flash somewhere that sends light back from that direction.
That might mean turning the flash behind me.
It might mean bouncing toward a side wall.
It might mean using the ceiling wall corner instead of the ceiling itself.
The flash head direction should be intentional.
Not just whatever position it was left in from the previous photo.
Behind you can work beautifully
This surprises people the first time they try it.
If there is a white wall behind me, I can turn the flash backward and let that wall send a broad wash of light forward.
The effective light source becomes huge.
And because the light is coming from behind the camera position instead of directly above the subject, faces can look much cleaner.
It can also feel less obviously like flash.
The downside is obvious.
If somebody walks behind you, they get blasted.
Sorry.
Event photography is full of small social crimes.
Corners can be really useful
A white wall meeting a white ceiling can give you a large reflective area.
Sometimes I aim the flash toward that corner rather than at one surface.
That gives the light somewhere bigger to spread.
It can also help when the ceiling is a little higher than I would like but the wall is close.
Again, this is why I think of bounce flash as using the room.
Not following one exact angle.
Every room gives you different options.
The tiny white bounce card is not doing what people think
A lot of flashes have that little pull out white card.
People pull it up and assume the flash is now beautifully bounced.
The card can throw a little bit of light forward.
That can help create catchlights or add some frontal fill.
But the card itself is tiny.
It is not magically turning the flash into a softbox.
Most of the soft light is still coming from wherever the flash is actually bouncing.
The card is just adding a little direct component.
Useful?
Sure.
Miracle?
No.
Direct flash is not automatically bad
This is where I think people get stuck.
They learn bounce flash.
Bounce flash looks better than ugly direct flash.
Then direct flash becomes forbidden forever.
I do not think that way.
Sometimes there is nowhere to bounce.
Black ceiling.
Black walls.
Outdoor dance floor.
Huge ballroom.
Tent with dark fabric.
Now what?
Direct flash may be the correct answer.
The question becomes how to make direct flash look intentional.
Direct flash can look good if you stop pretending it is bounce flash
If I am going direct, I am not trying to make it invisible.
I am accepting the look.
Strong frontal light.
Crisp shadows.
Background falling darker.
Motion.
Energy.
That can work really well during dancing, parties and fast reception moments.
The problem is usually when the photographer wants direct flash to somehow look exactly like soft bounce light.
It will not.
Use the look you actually have.
Flash power should not be an ego contest
I want enough power.
That is it.
If I am constantly firing full power, something about the setup probably needs attention.
Maybe the bounce distance is too long.
Maybe the ISO is unnecessarily low.
Maybe the aperture is too closed.
Maybe the room simply does not support the bounce I am trying to force.
Modern cameras can handle higher ISO very well.
I would rather raise ISO and let the flash work comfortably than cook the batteries trying to light an aircraft hangar from the floor.
ISO is part of the flash exposure too
This sounds obvious, but it matters.
If I go from ISO 400 to ISO 1600, the flash suddenly has a much easier job.
That can mean faster recycling.
Longer battery life.
Less heat.
And more ambient light if I want it.
There is this strange instinct to keep ISO ridiculously low because flash is available.
But at an event, I care more about consistency and speed.
Noise is usually much easier to deal with than a flash that is still recycling when the next important moment happens.
I usually want some ambient light
I do not love the look where the person is perfectly lit and the entire room behind them disappears into black.
Sometimes that is the look.
Usually I want some room left.
Lights.
Tables.
People.
The environment.
So I balance shutter speed, ISO and aperture to keep enough ambient exposure, then let the flash handle the person.
That is when flash starts feeling like it belongs inside the scene instead of replacing the scene.
Shutter speed becomes a creative control
Once flash is doing most of the work on the subject, I can play with shutter speed more.
Slower shutter.
More ambient.
More movement.
Maybe a little drag during dancing.
Faster shutter.
Cleaner background.
Less ambient movement.
Neither one is universally correct.
It depends on the moment.
But understanding that relationship gives you a lot more control than just leaving everything at 1/200 because that is where the flash works.
The room changes during the event
This happens constantly.
The reception room looks one way during dinner.
Then the lights come down.
The DJ turns on moving lights.
The uplighting changes color.
The dance floor starts flashing.
Suddenly the bounce setup that looked perfect thirty minutes ago looks completely different.
The physical room did not change.
The light did.
So I check again.
I am not loyal to settings.
If the room changes, I change.
White ceilings are not always clean white ceilings
Sometimes they are beige.
Sometimes they are warm wood.
Sometimes they are technically white but covered in colored uplighting.
That matters.
Bounce your flash off a ceiling being hit with magenta uplights and your "white" ceiling is no longer white.
Now your flash can start picking up some of that color.
This can actually look interesting.
It can also look terrible.
Again, look at the room.
The flash does not know what color the ceiling is.
You do.
Outdoors kills the entire conversation
No ceiling.
No wall.
No bounce.
Now you need another plan.
Direct flash.
Off camera flash.
Available light.
Some combination of those.
This is why learning only one flash technique is dangerous.
Bounce flash is great inside the right space.
The moment you walk outside, the building stops helping you.
Bounce flash is a tool, not a religion
I love it.
I use it constantly.
It is fast, simple and can look excellent.
But I do not force it.
If the ceiling is too high, I stop.
If the wall is green, I stop.
If the room is black, I stop.
If direct flash gives me the better photograph, I use direct flash.
If available light looks better, the flash stays off.
The goal is not to prove that bounce flash works everywhere.
It does not.
The goal is to understand why it works when it works.
Once you understand that, a black ceiling stops being a disaster.
It just means the room is telling you to do something else.
